I know you are not suppose to use a dark color in a small area but I am not a huge fan of lighter colors. I have used yellows and tans in my home already. I figure with the white cabinets and 36 inches of wainscoting wrapped around the room it should be ok. I was thinking of a navy to paint on the wall.
It is a myth that dark colors are wrong for small areas. The issue is not darkness, it is brightness. Bright colors jump forward, dark colors recede. This is true regardless of the hue.
Navy and white sound wonderful for a small bath.
With any color, I would suggest that you buy a small can and test the shade on the wall before painting the entire room. It is worth the investment of a few quarts of paint to get the results that you are after.
I am actually remodeling my small bathroom right now too, and was in the same quandary as you. I had reddish brown tile put down on the floor, but my tub, toilet, vanity and sink are all white. I didn’t want a very light color on the walls, because I’m not a fan of light colors either. I chose a light tan, which showed up darker on the wall than it had on the color chip, and it looks great. If you were using oak or some other darker trim and had off white fixtures, it might be a different story, but I think as long as you have the white to balance it out, it will be gorgeous!
I love the contrast of white woodwork and cabinetry with a dark color, its makes a great sharp contrast, much more interesting than a room in all light neutrals. Go for it!
Small spaces in a dark color can be really cozy, I’d even paint the ceiling the same as the wall color otherwise it will be too stark.
I’m a designer and recently did a small bath in white wainscoat, white cabinetry, white baseboard and crown moulding, then a deep indigo blue.
Go for it – it will be dramatic. Just be aware of the light level in the room because it will decrease the amount of reflected light.
I recently remodeled my bathroom and wrote an article about it. I also like dark colors. I used black, purple, and off white. Here’s a link to the article that describes all the work I did. There are pictures of the bathroom with it. Hope it helps!
